High heels really DO make you look good, say scientists (and here's why)

Monday, December 31, 2012
By AMANDA WILLIAMS

Scientists at the University of Portsmouth found that women wearing heels were rated as more attractive than when wearing flat shoes

The millions of women who will be squeezing their feet into uncomfortable high heels this New Year's Eve can rest assured that the pain will be worth it - because the shoes really do make you look better.
Researchers have found that heels can 'emphasise femininity' and change the way the entire body moves, including the pelvis, hips, legs, knees, feet and even the shoulders.
Scientists at the University of Portsmouth found that women wearing heels were rated as more attractive than when wearing flat shoes, even when those making the judgement are unable to see faces or bodies.

Researchers have found that heels can 'emphasise femininity' and change the way the entire body moves

The study appears in the scientific journal Evolution and Human Behavior.
Researchers wrote that 'evolution may partly explain the continuing popularity of high heels as an article of the female wardrobe.
'If wearing high heels emphasises some sex-specific aspects of the female form they may make women more attractive, and one motivation, which may be conscious or unconscious, for wearing heels is that it is part of mate selection', The Independent on Sunday reports.

Victoria Beckham has long been extolling the benefits of wearing heels and is rarely seen without them

As part of the research women were filmed walking for four minutes wearing identical flat shoes and 6cm heels.
All women who took part in research had an average of around 10 pairs of heels, which they wore at least once a week.
To ensure the women were rated on how attractive they were purely based on their high heels researchers used a technique called point-light display which highlights points of the body with lit markers.
It means the judges would see only the patterns of these lights as the woman walks.

Screen siren Marilyn Monroe, who apparently used to cut one heel to be half an inch shorter than the other to emphasise her 'wiggle' said 'I don't know who invented high heels, but all women owe him a lot'

Men and women viewed 30-second video clips of the walkers in high heels and flat shoes moving towards them and rated them on femininity and attractiveness.
In each case the women were rated as more attractive in heels.

The average female Mac user is 'pretty cute but awkwardly dressed,' company claims after compiling data from 1.1million Facebook profiles

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

Casual: BlueStacks claim most female Mac users like to dress down - preferring a t-shirt and jeans to a skirt and blouse

A tech start-up claims that the average female Mac user is 'pretty cute, but awkwardly dressed' after compiling data from 1.1million Facebook profiles.
BlueStacks, which produces software that allows Mac users to run Android apps, claims it has cobbled together an approximate picture of women who own Apple computers.
Mostly they dress down - preferring jeans, a t-shirt and tennis shoes. Only nine percent tend to wear skirts and eight percent prefer dress shoes, Bluestacks says.

Average: Most female Mac users have long hair and use newer versions of the Apple OS X operating system

'It turns out the average Mac user is pretty cute, if awkwardly dressed,' BlueStacks' head of marketing John Gargiulo said.
BlueStacks compiled data from hundreds of thousands of female Mac users after reviewing the Facebook profiles of its 1.1million Facebook fans.

The data pool produced a few surprising conclusions about Miss Mac 2012.
About 17 percent of female Mac users have an 'unusually large head'
52 percent have freckles and 43 percent wear glasses
two percent have blue hair, four percent are redheads
32 percent live in North America, 23 percent live in Asia, 19 percent are European and 14 percent live in Africa
52 percent are younger than 20
However, one Ph.D. data analyst seemed to be most surprised by the prevalence of a seemingly standard piece of women's wear.

The out-of-this-world pictures of terrifying storms captured by a daredevil photographer who ran toward dangerous weather instead of away from it

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

Moment of impact: Photographer Mitch Dowbrowner captured this image of a tornado touching down in Regan, North Dakota in 2011. It is titled 'Rope Out'

These are the out-of-this-world pictures produced by a landscape photographer who ran toward terrifying storms instead of away from them.
Mitch Dobrowner has had a passion for photograph since he was a teenager growing up on Long Island, New York.
He made his home in the American Southwest, the site of many spectacular and deadly weather events.

Strike in the distance: Called simply 'Road,' this image taken outside Guymon, Oklahoma in 2009 shows a bolt of lightning reaching down from the heavens

His work has been recognized around the world, placing first at the International Photography Awards in 2009 and 2010.
'Landscapes are living eco systems and environments. They have existed well before, and will hopefully be here way beyond the time we are here,' he writes on his blog.
Nearly all of the stunning images were shot in the western U.S. - where the wide expanses of the Great Plains and high deserts allow massive tornadoes, thunderheads and other storms to unfold without visual interruption.

Otherworldly: This cloud formation, photographed near Obar, New Mexico, in 2009, is titled 'Mothership' and it truly resembles an alien spacecraft preparing to land on Earth

Mr Dobrowner's impressive work has been featured in the National Geographic magazine and published in dozens of other outlets.
'Hopefully the images presented help communicate how I feel and what I see during those times,' he writes.

Downpour: Mr Dobrowner called this 2010 photo 'Monsoon.' He has managed to capture a massive raincloud drenching the arid land near Lordsburg, New Mexico

Massive: This is image captures a mesocyclone, a vortex of air that can be a precursor to a tornado. However this weather phenomenon, seen in Valentine, Nebraska, in 2009, can be up to 50 miles wide

'Jupiter': This swirling storm was captured outside Mobridge, South Dakota, in 2011

Impending doom: This image, 'Funnel Cornfield' reveals a funnel cloud forming outside Northfield, Minnesota, in 2010.

Breathtaking: 'Dark Star,' shot in 2011 outside Gainsville, Texas, manages to capture the massive scale of a rainstorm on the wide expanses of Texas

Ominous: Mr Dobrowner has photographed so many storms that that he has begun to see images in the clouds that make certain formations distinctive. This 2010 photo from Moorcroft, Wyoming, is titled 'Bear's Claw'

This 2010 storm near Glendale, North Dakota, is named 'Barber Pole' - though the title hardly captures to withering power of the swirling air mass

Taken in Galacia, Kansas, in 2009, Mr Dobrowner doesn't seem too far off with his title for this image - 'Arm of God'

Endless: 'Wall Cloud' shows a storm that seems to stretch endlessly outside Davidson, Wyoming, in 2009

'Vapor Cloud,' shot outside Clayton, New Mexico, in 2009, reveals a massive 'foot' descending from the larger storm cloud

The lonely outcropping of trees near Texline, Texas, adds a sense of scale to this 2009 photo titled 'Trees-Clouds'

From Los Angeles to Shanghai! David Beckham considers muti-million pound club deal that could see him relocate to China

Sunday, December 30, 2012
By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

Family on the move: Speculation is mounting about where David and Victoria Beckham will move to next

For a while it seemed like the Beckham family would stay in Los Angeles for the long term. But since the arrival of baby Harper and David's tenure at the local football club coming to an end, it seems the fashionable family will be on the move again very soon.
Until recently it was thought that they would either return to their native UK or head to the opulent surroundings of Monaco.

New home: Shanghai has plenty to offer fashion fan Victoria, and a big money deal for David

But it looks like their house hunting could take them further East if reports that David has been offered a contract by a Chinese club are true.
It has been claimed that he is mulling over a contract with Chinese Super League team Shanghai Shenhua.

Family on the go: The Beckhams and their four adorable children could be moving to China

But it looks like their house hunting could take them further East if reports that David has been offered a contract by a Chinese club are true.
It has been claimed that he is mulling over a contract with Chinese Super League team Shanghai Shenhua.
If he accepted, he would earn £250,000 a week and the chance to boost his income with merchandising deals worth £20 million.

The England veteran spent six seasons in Major League Soccer at LA Galaxy after earning a heroic reputation at Manchester United and Real Madrid.
A move to the world's second biggest economy would not only be a shrewd move for Beckham's footballing career, but also for the shared interests of him and his wife.
If they set up home in China, he and Victoria would have the opportunity to sell their brands - including perfumes, Becks' H&M underwear range and Victoria's lauded high fashion label - in a nation of nearly one-and-a-half billion people.

Put it away, mum! Paraguayan model Claudia Galanti clutches onto baby Tal while wearing revealing, see-through vest

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

Revealing: Claudia Galanti carries her six-month-old Tal while wearing a sheer black top

Most mothers of two young children don't have time to think about being sexy.
But Claudia Galanti embraced both motherhood and her sultry side as she posed for a racy Miami beach photo shoot at the same time as looking after her two young kids on Saturday.
In a scene that might be embarrassing for the little one in years to come, the Paraguayan model held on tightly to six-month-old baby Tal while going braless in a sheer, black tank top.

Hot mamma: Little Tal seems unfazed by her mum's choice of beach wear, looking content in the Miami sun

The 31-year-old star, who has been trying to juggle the raunchy photo shoot with her family duties over the last few days, obviously didn't mind about son Liam and Tal seeing another side to their mum.
A far cry from a frumpy new mum, the former reality star seemed completely comfortable with the juxtaposed roles of sex kitten and doting mother.
Instead of leaving her little ones with a babysitter, or with her partner Arnaud Mimran, Claudia seemed happy enough to bring them to work with her, despite the nature of the shoot.

Different roles: Claudia has to juggle looking after her children and posing for the racy photo shoot

Doting mum: The mother-of-two seems happy to show off her young children as she spends time with them during the shoot

The model changed into a number of racy outfits while her little ones watched on, firstly lying in the sand in a short black dress.
She then changed into a pair of hotpants and just a leather coat, pulling it slightly open to reveal a hint of cleavage.
Claudia then put on a pair of denim shorts and went braless in a sheer top, but then had to pick up her young daughter, who she carried around the beach with her.

Back to work: The model turns sultry as the camera is turned back onto her

Risqué: The mother-of-two seems completely confident about baring all during the racy shoot

Still got it: Claudia might have given birth to two children in under two years, but she's kept her killer figure

After the shoot was finished, Claudia's attention was back to her children as she pushed 20-month-old Liam home in his stroller and carried Tal on her hip.
The day before, Claudia had enjoyed a little down time in the Florida sun with her family, strolling along the beach and then stripping off for a swim in the sea.

On fire: Claudia doesn't look like your average mum as she takes her children for a walk along the beach

Mum duty: Claudia clearly doesn't have time to change before taking her kids home

The family of four spent the entire Christmas period basking in the Miami heat, with Claudia spending most of the time sunning herself on the beach, in between photo shoots.
The star, who's profile is on the rise, made her Italian TV debut as a showgirl in 2008, before going on to become a contestant in the the seventh edition of the reality show The Famous Island.

Doting: The star doesn't want to be away from her kids for too long, hugging them in between shoots

Malfoy magic! Harry Potter alum Tom Felton relaxes with his stunning bikini-clad girlfriend Jade Olivia

By AMELIA PROUD

Summer loving: Tom Felton and his gorgeous girl Jade Olivia enjoyed some sunshine in Miami on Saturday

He may have graduated Hogwarts, but it seems Harry Potter star Tom Felton still carries some of Draco's magic with him.
The Harry Potter actor has attracted - and held - the attentions of stunning Jade Olivia and today the couple spent an idyllic day in the Miami sunshine.
The 25-year-old protected his pale skin by wearing a sky blue T-shirt while Jade, who has been dating the Harry for over four years, sunned herself in a colourful bikini.

Nice guys do get the girls: Slytherin would never have chosen nice guy Tom and guess what, he got the hot girl!

The low-key couple have an incredible strong relationship considering their industry and indeed, age.
Jade was the Stunt Coordinator’s Assistant for the Harry Potter films and Tom told German magazine Bravo that it was a good thing they worked together, since the 14-hour shoots ensured that he wouldn’t see her unless they were both on-set.
She also played Draco's wife Astoria Greengrass in the Deathly Hallows, though Tom admits he had to 'twist her arm' to do it.

Light reading: Jade was reading Alejandro Junger's Clean which outlines a plan to 'restore the body's natural ability to heal itself'

The look of love: Jade gave Tom an affectionate glance as he goofed about with his hair in a bobble

He told The Leaky Cauldron in 2010: 'The producers actually came to me about six months ago and asked me, and I was like, OK, I’ll ask her.
'She was slightly reluctant but I pulled her arm and twisted it and then she was filming with me for three days at King’s Cross.'
But she was also an extra, as Tom told Cosmopolitan: 'The Slytherin boys and I used to play a game called Fit Extras.

It takes all sorts: As this rather unusual picture proves. We're not quite sure what's going on with the doll, or the cringe-worthy Christmas jumpers for that matter

A little squiffy: It must have been a heavy night for this lightweight Chihuahua but at least its got a friend to nurse it through the morning

Dozing off: This pooch on the left looks like its struggling to stay awake while the innocent little dog on the right appears to be quite something else entirely when viewed from a certain angle
